Tim Cook stepped down as Apple’s CEO on September 1 after 15 years leading the company, handing the role to John Ternus, Apple’s former senior vice president of hardware engineering.

Why Now

Cook, 65, announced the move in April, saying he chose to step down at a moment when “the business had to be doing great,” the product roadmap was “incredible,” and his successor was “ready for the role.” He said he remains “healthy” with “high” energy.

His Farewell Memo

Cook sent an emotional memo to Apple staff on his final day, writing, “I love this company and the team behind it, and I couldn’t let this day pass without sending a note to you.” He added that he will “miss leading you and being with you for every step, even as I take enormous comfort in handing the helm to someone as brilliant and wonderful and capable as John.”

On His Successor

Of Ternus, Cook wrote, “Few people understand what it takes to build products that change the world the way John does and I could not be more excited for his leadership.” Cook told employees that whatever success he achieved belongs to them, calling his team the most extraordinary group of people he has worked with.

What’s Next for Cook

Cook is not leaving Apple. He moves into the role of executive chairman, where Apple says he will assist with “certain aspects” of the company, including engaging with policymakers around the world. Cook has said he expects to serve in that role “for a long time.”
