San Francisco lawmakers have unanimously voted to grant historic landmark status to the House of Latin Rock, a Mission District home covered in a mural honoring the neighborhood’s Latin rock musical history, formally protecting it from being painted over, altered, or demolished by future owners or developers.

The House and the Mural

The Spanish-style home at 25th and York streets, owned by Richard and Tammy Segovia, is covered in a mural depicting Latin American performing artists tied to the Mission District’s music scene, including Carlos Santana, Maria Medina, and Pete Escovedo. Richard Segovia has maintained and expanded the mural for decades.

More Than Just a Painted Wall

Beyond the artwork itself, the house has served as a real gathering place: hosting jam sessions, community festivals, and celebrations, along with efforts to involve the neighborhood’s youth in music. The landmark designation protects both the building and the mural from changes without city approval.

Why the Timing Matters

The designation comes as the Mission District has faced continued pressure from gentrification, with long-standing cultural institutions and murals in the neighborhood increasingly at risk as property turns over. Formal landmark status gives the House of Latin Rock a level of protection most murals and community spaces in the neighborhood don’t have.
