Marjorie Taylor Greene has spent this month filming herself at gas pumps. On Thursday in Austin she said the movement she helped build is dead and called it a cult.

At the Texas Tribune Festival on Thursday, Greene described herself as politically homeless and delivered the line that traveled.

She built the argument around accountability.
When you vote for someone, not only are you supporting them, but you’re holding them accountable. And if they can’t be truthful and hold [Trump] accountable to his campaign promises that affect the entire country, then they’re liars, and they’re hypocrites and they’re in a cult.

She was careful about one thing. She said she is still America First, which she defines as a narrower set of policy commitments than the broader movement backing the president, and she said plainly that she has not become a Democrat.
The gas pump videos
The Austin appearance is the headline. The pump videos are the campaign.
She has been posting them from different states. A Shell station in central Florida showing regular at $4.79 and diesel at $6.98. A California stop with diesel at $8.49, which she contrasted with $6.59 in Georgia.
One posted September 15 has drawn more than 2.9 million views on X.
Her framing is not subtle.

She has also written that she is sick of Trump’s winning, in quotation marks, and pointed out that he has now passed Joe Biden for the highest diesel price in American history.
Whether the numbers hold up
They do. This is the part that matters most and the part most likely to get waved away because of who is saying it.
Per the Energy Information Administration, as of September 21:
- On-highway diesel national average: $6.529 a gallon.
- Regular gasoline: $4.478.
- Diesel is up $2.78 from a year earlier.
The previous diesel record was $5.81 to $5.82 in June 2022, under Biden, during the supply shock that followed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. That record fell on September 9, when the average hit $5.97.
When the Iran war started in late February, diesel averaged $3.76. It is up more than 55% since.
So her claim is accurate. In dollar terms this is the highest diesel has ever been in the United States.
Why diesel is the number that reaches you
Gasoline is what you notice. Diesel is what you pay for without seeing it.
Trucks, trains and ships run on it. Every grocery item, every Amazon box, every load of building materials carries a fuel surcharge that moves with the diesel price. A dollar on diesel shows up weeks later in the cost of food.
That is why Chuck Grassley has been pressing Trump to halt diesel exports. It is also why consumer sentiment is sitting near a record low while the administration talks about winning.
The war is the driver. Brent crude topped $108 in mid-September, and Trump told the UN this week he might annihilate Iran while predicting a deal right after the November midterms.
How the break happened
Greene split from Trump last November. He started calling her Marjorie Traitor Greene. She resigned her seat and left Congress in January.
By her account the Epstein files were the last straw. She pushed the president to release the full documentation and he would not.
She has also described being yelled at in the Oval Office, and said that after her son received a death threat, Trump texted her that she deserved it.
She says she has talked politics with Tucker Carlson and Thomas Massie, and that among the people she knows weighing a 2028 run, she does not see a credible candidate.

Take the facts first, because they are not in dispute and they do not depend on trusting her. Diesel is at $6.529. That is a record. It broke a record set under Biden, which Republicans spent three years describing as proof of failed leadership. The standard was theirs, the number is worse now, and a party that built an argument on gas prices does not get to retire the argument when the prices are its own.
That said, nothing about her being right on this makes her a truth-teller. She spent six years as one of the loudest voices in the movement she is now calling a cult, and the things she is describing about it, the demand for loyalty over accountability, the hostility to anyone who breaks ranks, were all true while she was benefiting from them. She is not describing a change in the movement. She is describing a change in her position within it.
The Epstein detail is where that shows most clearly. By her own account, the files were the last straw. Not the policy, not the spending, not the prices she is now filming. It became intolerable at the point where it involved a fight she had personally picked and lost. That is a conversion with a very specific timestamp.
What she says happened to her family is a separate matter and should be treated that way. If a president texted a woman that she deserved it after her child was threatened, that is not a political dispute, and no one’s voting record makes it acceptable. That claim deserves to be answered rather than absorbed into the noise.
The gas pump videos are effective for a reason that has nothing to do with her. A person standing in front of a number, saying the number out loud, is the most durable form of political argument there is, and it worked against Democrats in 2022 for exactly the same reason it is working now. Whoever holds the White House when diesel is $6.50 is going to answer for it, and the people paying that price at the register do not care much who noticed first.
The question
If the diesel record is real and it broke under Trump, does it matter that the person pointing at it spent six years enabling him? And when someone calls a movement a cult only after being thrown out of it, is that testimony or just a grievance with good timing?
