NASA’s new Administrator, Jared Isaacman—the billionaire fighter pilot and civilian astronaut—visited the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) to celebrate a bold, logical shift in America’s space strategy: bringing nuclear fission to space.
Isaacman is restarting the agency’s nuclear program, pushing for compact fission reactors on the Moon to power lunar bases through the brutal 14-day nights, and atomic engines in deep space.
As Isaacman pointed out, chemical propulsion is a dead end. It converts an almost immeasurably tiny fraction of the energy locked in matter into motion. Fission, on the other hand, unlocks a tenth of one percent of that energy. It is a massive leap that could cut the travel time to Mars from a punishing nine months to just three.
But the real story here isn’t just the physics; it’s the shift in leadership mindset.
For too long, government agencies have outsourced their core capabilities to massive, legacy contractors whose business models rely on cost-plus contracts—meaning the slower and more expensive a project is, the more money they make. Isaacman is trying to break that cycle by cutting down outsourcing, bringing technical expertise back in-house, and partnering directly with agile nuclear startups like Radiant.
This is what independent leadership looks like. It’s about looking at a problem—like a nine-month, radiation-soaked transit to Mars—and refusing to accept the lazy, bureaucratic consensus that “this is just how things are done.” Power is the innermost loop of human progress, on Earth and in space.
