What Happened
The California Highway Patrol said the spill occurred shortly after 5 p.m., sending containers of Utz cheese balls tumbling onto the freeway and temporarily blocking the carpool lane west of the Long Beach Boulevard onramp. The impact of the fall sheared open several containers, littering the roadway with loose cheese balls.
Why It Took So Long to Clear
CHP officials said the cleanup was slowed less by the mess itself than by drivers who pulled over on the freeway to retrieve intact containers before crews could clear the scene, adding to the traffic delays the spill had already caused.
No Injuries Reported
Despite the chaos and lane blockage, no injuries were reported in connection with the spill, and traffic returned to normal once CHP and cleanup crews cleared the containers from the roadway.
