A Swiss gardener has broken his own Guinness World Record for the longest chili pepper for a third time, growing one measuring 1 foot, 8.6 inches, or about 52 centimeters.
A Growing Streak
Jurg Wiesli first set the record in October 2017 with a chili measuring 1 foot, 5.7 inches, measured at a vegetable competition in Jona, St. Gallen. He broke his own record the following year with a 1-foot, 7.9-inch pepper, and his latest chili, measured on August 11, extended the record further still.
How He Grows Them
Wiesli starts his chili seeds indoors in March under grow lights kept at 28 degrees Celsius, then plants them outdoors at the end of April once the risk of frost has passed. He tills the soil thoroughly, mixes in mature compost, and waters regularly with balanced fertilizer through the growing season.
