In one week, President Trump lifted sanctions on Russian diesel after a call with Vladimir Putin, wished Putin a happy birthday, blamed Ukraine for high fuel prices and said Ukraine needs a new president. Putin’s envoy called it “historic.” A lot of Americans are asking the same question again: does Russia have something on Trump?
Here’s an honest answer. There is no public evidence that Russia has blackmail on Trump. But there is a long, documented record of Trump, his family and his team taking Russia’s side in ways no other modern president has, and that record deserves a straight look.
Does Russia have kompromat on Trump?
Nobody has ever proved it. The 2016 Steele dossier’s claims of Russian blackmail material were never verified, and parts were discredited. Special counsel Robert Mueller found Russia interfered in 2016 “in sweeping and systematic fashion” and that the campaign “expected it would benefit” from stolen information, but did not establish a criminal conspiracy between the campaign and Russia, according to his report. Anyone who tells you Putin definitely has a tape is guessing.
What Trump-Russia connections are documented?
- Business. In 2008, Donald Trump Jr. said “Russians make up a pretty disproportionate cross-section of a lot of our assets,” as Salon reported. A golf writer said Eric Trump told him in 2014, “We have all the funding we need out of Russia,” which Eric called “completely fabricated,” WBUR reported.
- Trump Tower Moscow. The Mueller report found the Trump Organization pursued a Moscow tower project into June 2016, while Trump was running for president and saying he had no business in Russia.
- The 2016 campaign. Trump Jr. took a June 2016 meeting offered as Russian government dirt on Hillary Clinton, replying, “If it’s what you say I love it.” Campaign chairman Paul Manafort shared internal polling data with Konstantin Kilimnik, whom the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee called a “Russian intelligence officer” and a “grave counterintelligence threat,” in its report.
- Helsinki. In 2018, standing next to Putin, Trump questioned his own intelligence agencies’ finding that Russia interfered: “I don’t see any reason why it would be,” CBS News reported.
- Pardons. Trump pardoned Manafort, Roger Stone and Michael Flynn, who had admitted lying to the FBI about his contacts with Russia’s ambassador.
What has Trump done for Russia in his second term?
- Called Zelenskyy “a Dictator without Elections” in February 2025, echoing a Kremlin talking point, Ukrainska Pravda reported.
- Pushed a 2025 Ukraine peace plan that began with talks between envoy Steve Witkoff and Putin envoy Kirill Dmitriev, and would have required Ukraine to give up land it still held. A leaked recording showed Witkoff coaching a Kremlin adviser on how to pitch Trump, Fortune reported.
- Lifted sanctions on Russian diesel this month while Ukraine’s negotiators were meeting U.S. officials, then said Ukraine needs a new president, Reuters reported. Witkoff and Jared Kushner may visit Moscow within two weeks.
If not blackmail, what explains it?
There are explanations that don’t require a secret tape. Trump openly admires strongmen and has said so for years. He still resents the Russia investigation and sees Ukraine as part of it, going back to his first impeachment. He wants lower fuel prices before an election. And he likes deals with powerful men more than alliances with weaker ones. None of that makes the pattern less real. It just means you don’t need a conspiracy theory to be worried about it.
The BeezLoop Take
We should be careful not to claim more than the evidence shows. There’s no proof Russia owns Trump, and pretending there is hands his defenders an easy win. But the documented record is damning enough on its own: business ties, a campaign that welcomed Russian help, a summit where he took Putin’s word over his own agencies, pardons for the people who lied about Russia, and a second term that keeps delivering what Moscow wants.
Whatever the reason, Americans are paying for it in credibility with our allies, and Ukrainians are paying for it in lives. The question isn’t whether Putin has a secret file. It’s why an American president keeps acting like Russia’s interests come first.
The open question: will any congressional Republican demand answers about this diesel deal before the midterms?
