Hundreds of masked demonstrators blocked every road into the Port of Dover on Saturday morning, snarling traffic for miles and briefly shutting down Britain’s busiest ferry crossing in what police described as an anti-immigration protest.
Witnesses said the protesters linked arms across the main approach roads and chanted “stop the boats,” a reference to the small-boat Channel crossings that have become one of the most politically charged issues in British politics. The Port of Dover confirmed on social media that all traffic in and out was halted due to what it called “an ongoing public order incident,” and Kent Police said officers were engaging with the crowd.
A Four-Mile Backup
The blockade produced roughly a four-mile tailback of cars, freight trucks, and coaches trying to reach the ferry terminal for crossings to Calais. P&O Ferries said access to the port was restored just before midday, though delays continued to work through the schedule for several hours afterward.
Government Response
The U.K. government condemned the protest, with officials saying that blocking a major port goes well beyond the bounds of peaceful demonstration and disrupts the livelihoods of hauliers, ferry workers, and ordinary travelers who had nothing to do with the policy dispute being protested. No arrests had been publicly confirmed as of Saturday afternoon.
The demonstration is the latest flashpoint in a summer of anti-immigration organizing across the U.K., where small-boat arrivals have kept migration near the top of the political agenda ahead of expected reforms to asylum processing. Protest organizers were not immediately identified, and the masked nature of Saturday’s crowd made it harder for authorities to say who exactly showed up.
