That gap between the thermometer and how it actually feels is the whole story. A heat advisory in South Florida kicks in specifically when the heat index, not the raw temperature, hits 105°F or higher for two hours or more. Cross 110°F on that same measure and it upgrades to an excessive heat warning. Dry Saharan dust moving through the region has actually kept a lid on afternoon rain this week, which sounds like good news until you realize less rain means less relief and more uninterrupted sun baking the pavement.
None of this is exotic for August in South Florida, and that’s part of the problem: advisories like this are common enough that it’s easy to tune them out. But heat index numbers in the 105-110 range are squarely in the zone where heat exhaustion and heat stroke become real risks, especially for outdoor workers, kids, older residents, and anyone without reliable air conditioning. The basic precautions are unglamorous but they work: hydrate before you’re thirsty, take breaks in shade or AC, and treat the early symptoms, dizziness, nausea, heavy sweating that suddenly stops, as reasons to stop what you’re doing immediately rather than push through.
