What Happened
An explosive-laden drone was found near a Ukrainian cargo plane at the airport on the evening of August 4 and was defused before it could detonate. Leipzig/Halle is a major freight hub and a key logistics point for supporting Ukraine, with Ukrainian Antonov transport aircraft regularly using the airport.
Germany’s Response
German officials said intelligence findings point to “people being involved who acted on behalf of Russian state entities,” and that police investigations, the pattern of the attack, and intelligence all “prove a Russian responsibility.” Germany has raised its national threat assessment from “general” to “high.”

The incident follows a string of drone sightings that have disrupted German airports in recent months, including closures at Munich and Berlin airports. Russia has denied any responsibility for the Leipzig incident.
