Among the tributes following Dolly Parton’s death this week, one story has resurfaced widely: how she met her husband of nearly 60 years, Carl Dean, on her very first day in Nashville, at a laundromat called the Wishy Washy.

How They Met

Parton arrived in Nashville in 1964 at 18 years old, and, eager to leave her home in rural East Tennessee, showed up with a bag of dirty laundry. While her clothes washed at the Wishy Washy Laundromat, she bought a cold drink and walked around getting a look at her new city. Dean drove past in a Chevrolet and called out to warn her she was going to get sunburned.

“After I’d put my clothes in the machine, I started walkin’ down the street, just lookin’ at my new home, and this guy hollered at me, and I waved,” Parton recounted to the New York Times. “Bein’ from the country, I spoke to everybody. And he came over and, well, it was Carl, my husband.” Dean later said his first thought was, “I’m gonna marry that girl.”

A Courtship Kept Almost Entirely Private

Parton turned down Dean’s initial request for a date but invited him over the next day while she was babysitting her nephew. The two married two years later, on Memorial Day, May 30, 1966, in a small ceremony in Ringgold, Georgia. Dean, an Army veteran who ran his own asphalt-paving business, largely stayed out of the public eye for the rest of his life, rarely appearing at red carpets or industry events even as Parton’s career made her one of the most famous entertainers in the world.

A Marriage That Outlasted the Spotlight

Dean died in March 2025 at age 82, ending a marriage of nearly 60 years. Parton spoke afterward about how much his death had affected her, saying she felt “worn down and worn out” by the loss even as she continued working. Her own death last week, just over a year after his, closed out a partnership that began with a shouted warning about sunburn outside a Nashville laundromat.
