Audi is building its first U.S. factory, a $4.2 billion plant near Macon, Georgia. President Trump announced it at a campaign rally in Perry on Saturday with Audi CEO Gernot Döllner on stage. “We are planning to bring our biggest and most premium SUVs and produce them here in Macon, Georgia,” Döllner said, Fox Business reported. “This is a long-term investment because we believe in the American market.”

State officials say the plant could employ at least 4,500 people when it’s fully built. Trump said it could eventually make 200,000 cars a year and that construction could begin “next month.”

Where is the Audi plant in Georgia?

On the Middle Georgia Megasite, about 5 miles west of I-75 on Ga. 96 at the edge of Fort Valley in Peach County, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Georgia and Peach County bought the land in 2022, and it can expand to about 2,400 acres. Bibb, Houston and Peach counties each pledged $7 million to get the site ready. Other incentives haven’t been released yet.

“A job-creating, high-caliber automotive manufacturer” is what the state wanted for the region, said Gov. Brian Kemp, who wasn’t at the rally. Georgia already has Hyundai’s EV plant near Savannah, Kia in West Georgia and Rivian’s factory under construction east of Atlanta.

Why is Audi building cars in the U.S. now?

Tariffs are the obvious reason. Audi, owned by Volkswagen, has never built cars in the U.S. and has been importing every vehicle it sells here, which means paying Trump’s tariffs on imported cars. Building SUVs in Georgia gets around that for its biggest-selling models. Trump called it “the single largest investment in U.S. auto industry history, modern history,” which is an exaggeration: Hyundai’s Georgia plant alone was a bigger investment. Commercial production isn’t expected until around 2031, Seeking Alpha reported.

What does the Audi plant mean for car buyers?

Not much, not soon. A plant that starts production around 2031 won’t change the price of an Audi you buy this year or next. Longer term, building here could shield Audi’s SUV prices from tariff swings. For Middle Georgia, the payoff is jobs, though 4,500 is a state estimate for a fully built plant, years away.

The BeezLoop Take

This is a real win for Middle Georgia, and for the argument that tariffs can bring factories home. A German carmaker that never built in America is now putting $4.2 billion into Peach County. That deserves credit.

But it was announced on a campaign stage 10 days before an election, with numbers that will take five years or more to show up. Voters should judge it the way they’d judge any promise: when the plant opens and the jobs exist. And they should remember that tariffs that bring this plant are also why the car in their driveway costs more today.

The open question: will construction really start next month, and how much did Georgia taxpayers put up to land it?
