Tech stocks had their worst day since early June on Thursday, and the trigger was a company that actually beat expectations. Meta posted strong results but said it had its first cash outflow in more than a decade because of how much it’s spending on AI. Its stock fell 7%, and the rest of tech went with it, Reuters reported.

The Nasdaq fell 2.6% to 26,008.86. The S&P 500 lost 1.2% to 7,663.43. The Dow barely moved, ending up 12 points at 52,867.98, because money rotated into companies like Procter & Gamble, Lockheed Martin and Blackstone.

Why did tech stocks fall so hard?

Because investors are asking when all that AI spending pays off. Meta’s numbers were good, but burning cash to build AI data centers made people wonder if tech companies will have to borrow more to keep up, Yahoo Finance reported. Chip stocks took the worst of it. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 6.7%, its biggest drop since June, and Intel, AMD, Sandisk and Marvell each lost more than 8%. Tesla fell 3.1% even after reporting better cash flow than expected.

“Investors are starting to realize that there are some holes in the AI story,” said Paul Nolte of Murphy & Sylvest. Oil didn’t help. Houthi attacks on Saudi targets pushed crude to a five-month high, and markets now see about even odds of another Fed rate hike before the end of the year.

What does the tech sell-off mean for my 401(k)?

If you own an S&P 500 or Nasdaq index fund, you own a lot of these companies, so a day like Thursday hits you directly. But context matters: the chip index is still up more than 50% this year even after falling 26% from its June record. Most companies reporting this quarter are still beating expectations. For long-term savers, the usual advice holds: don’t sell in a panic, and check whether you’re more loaded up on tech than you meant to be. Alphabet, Microsoft and Amazon report soon, and they’ll be the next test of whether AI spending is paying off.

The BeezLoop Take

Meta beat its numbers and still dropped 7%. That tells you the market’s question has changed. It’s no longer “is AI real?” It’s “who’s paying for it, and when do they get their money back?” A company burning cash for the first time in a decade isn’t a scandal, but it’s a fair warning sign.

This is the second big AI scare in a week. Neither is a crash, but together they show how much of the stock market, and of regular people’s retirement accounts, now rides on a handful of companies spending at a pace nobody has proven they can sustain.

The open question: will Alphabet, Microsoft and Amazon show AI paying off when they report, or add to the doubts?
