A pickup truck struck multiple pedestrians on a crowded sidewalk in Old Town Fort Collins, Colorado, on Saturday during the city’s annual Tour de Fat bicycle festival, killing one person and sending five others to area hospitals.

How It Happened

Fort Collins police said the driver first backed out of a parking spot along West Mountain Avenue and struck another vehicle, then drove forward onto the sidewalk in the 100 block of West Mountain Avenue, hitting several pedestrians before the truck struck a tree and came to a stop. The crash happened around 11:44 a.m., during the bicycle festival that had drawn large crowds to the area.

The Investigation

One of the people struck was later pronounced dead; the other five, along with the truck’s driver, were taken to area hospitals. Police have not released the names of the victims or the driver, and are still investigating what led up to the crash, including whether impairment was a factor. No charges have been announced as of Sunday.

What’s Next

Fort Collins police said the investigation remains active and asked anyone who witnessed the crash to come forward. The Tour de Fat festival, an annual event that combines a costumed bike parade with a street festival, had brought “numerous” bystanders to the area at the time of the crash.

What police have not said, and why the silence is standard

Investigators have withheld the names of the victims and the driver and have not said whether impairment was involved. That reticence is normal and should not be read as either protecting someone or hiding something. Names are held until families are notified. Impairment determinations wait on toxicology, which takes weeks. Charging decisions wait on both, which is why none had been announced.

The sequence police did describe is the detail that will matter most. The driver reportedly backed out of a parking space and struck another vehicle first, then drove forward onto the sidewalk. Two separate collisions in quick succession, the first a low-speed backing crash, is a pattern more consistent with a driver who lost control or was impaired than with someone deliberately targeting a crowd. Nothing in the public record supports a conclusion either way yet, but the mechanics of what happened tend to shape whether a case becomes a vehicular homicide prosecution or something graver.

The vulnerability street festivals carry

Tour de Fat closes streets and draws crowds onto sidewalks in a compact downtown, which is the entire appeal and also the exposure. Events of this size in the U.S. frequently feature barriers at road closures while leaving active parking and traffic immediately adjacent to dense pedestrian areas. This crash began in a parking space beside the crowd, not at a closure point. Whether cities should extend hard barriers around parking adjacent to festival sidewalks is a cost-and-disruption question most have quietly answered no to, and it is worth asking whether that answer holds up.
