A pickup truck struck multiple pedestrians on a crowded sidewalk in Old Town Fort Collins, Colorado, on Saturday during the city’s annual Tour de Fat bicycle festival, killing one person and sending five others to area hospitals.
How It Happened
Fort Collins police said the driver first backed out of a parking spot along West Mountain Avenue and struck another vehicle, then drove forward onto the sidewalk in the 100 block of West Mountain Avenue, hitting several pedestrians before the truck struck a tree and came to a stop. The crash happened around 11:44 a.m., during the bicycle festival that had drawn large crowds to the area.
The Investigation
One of the people struck was later pronounced dead; the other five, along with the truck’s driver, were taken to area hospitals. Police have not released the names of the victims or the driver, and are still investigating what led up to the crash, including whether impairment was a factor. No charges have been announced as of Sunday.
What’s Next
Fort Collins police said the investigation remains active and asked anyone who witnessed the crash to come forward. The Tour de Fat festival, an annual event that combines a costumed bike parade with a street festival, had brought “numerous” bystanders to the area at the time of the crash.
