Red Sox outfielder Roman Anthony and shortstop Trevor Story are nearing activation from the injured list, with both expected to rejoin the team in New York before the end of Boston’s four-game series against the Yankees.

Where Things Stand

Interim manager Chad Tracy said Friday that both players were off that day and set to play again for Triple-A Worcester on Saturday, continuing their rehab assignments rather than being activated immediately. Reports indicated both could be activated as soon as Saturday or Sunday, with Sunday’s series finale seen as the more likely target.

Their Injuries

Anthony has been out since May 4 with a torn ring-finger tendon, while Story has been sidelined since May 14 with a sports hernia.

Why the Timing Matters

Boston fired manager Alex Cora and struggled early in the season before catching fire, going 32-5 over one stretch that included a franchise-record 15-game winning streak. With the AL Wild Card race tight, the team has an incentive to get its returning players activated as soon as they’re cleared, rather than extending their rehab assignments further.
