King Harald V of Norway, Europe’s oldest reigning monarch, died Friday just after 6:35 a.m. local time, the Royal House of Norway announced. He was 89 and had reigned for 35 years. His son, Crown Prince Haakon, immediately became king, taking the regnal name Haakon VIII.
His Final Days
Harald’s health had deteriorated rapidly in his final days after he was hospitalized with fluid accumulation in the body linked to a blood disorder, and he later developed an infection. The royal family gathered at his bedside as his condition was described as extremely serious.
A Life Shaped by War and a Break From Tradition
Harald was sent into exile in the United States as a child during the Nazi occupation of Norway. He later broke with royal convention by declining a series of matches with European noblewomen and instead marrying his school sweetheart, Sonja Haraldsen, a commoner, a decision that was controversial at the time but became emblematic of how he modernized the Norwegian monarchy while keeping it popular.
The Succession
King Haakon VIII, 53, ascends to a throne that in recent decades has become largely ceremonial, with real political power resting in Norway’s elected government. His daughter, Princess Ingrid Alexandra, is now first in line to the throne.
A Nation Mourns
Norwegians began laying flowers outside the royal palace following the announcement. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre canceled travel plans and paid tribute to Harald as a unifying figure, saying he “helped us see the best in ourselves.” A state funeral is expected in the coming days.
