Back-to-school season has officially arrived on August 13, 2026, bringing with it the annual corporate spending rush where parents are squeezed into spending billions on supplies, tech, and clothing in an economy already hammered by inflation.

But this year, school districts across the country are introducing a new, highly controversial mandate under the banner of “safety”: forcing students to carry clear, transparent plastic backpacks to prevent contraband and ensure building security.

Let’s apply some simple, old-school street smarts to this administrative requirement.

Forcing children to pack their textbooks, personal items, and hygiene products into a clear plastic bag is cheap, performative security theater that does little to address the systemic roots of school safety. It simply turns a child’s private belongings into transparent public property, stripping them of basic dignity and treating them as potential suspects the moment they step onto campus.

Meanwhile, the e-commerce giants and retail monopolies are laughing all the way to the bank, markup-pricing these specialized clear bags as “mandatory supplies” for parents who are already struggling to pay for basic groceries and gasoline above $4 per gallon.

We are teaching our kids a deeply disturbing lesson before they even sit in their first class: that their personal privacy is entirely disposable, and that safety is something you buy from a corporate manufacturer under the direction of a slow-moving school board.
