The 911 call came in around 9:54 Saturday night, near 10th Street and Poplar Avenue in Sanford.
Police say a family had gathered on Poplar Avenue and suspects opened fire into the crowd. Eight people were hit.
Five have been treated and released. Three are still in the hospital, two of them critical and one stable.
Who they were there for
Shirley Wynn told WFTV the gathering was for her grandson. He was 18 when he died in a car accident in 2020.
So a family met to mark one young death and eight of them got shot doing it.
Where the case stands
No arrests. No motive. Police have not said how many shooters or released descriptions. Gun violence overall has been falling even as certain kinds of shootings keep rising.

There is no national story here and that is the story. Eight people shot at once, and unless you live in Central Florida you would not have heard about it. A memorial gathering got fired into and it did not make the evening news.
The threshold has moved. Eight wounded and none dead reads as a bad Saturday now, and the coverage matches. The people in that hospital do not experience it that way, and neither does a family that has now lost one young man to a car and nearly lost more to gunfire at his memorial.
What matters next is the arrest rate, and it usually is not good. Shootings into crowds are hard cases. Lots of witnesses, lots of fear, few people willing to be the one who talks. If this goes unsolved it will not be for lack of people who saw it. It is the same pattern as the Chicago ambush that killed rapper BloodHound Q50 with no arrests a week later.
What to watch
Whether Sanford police release vehicle or suspect descriptions this week. In crowd shootings the first 72 hours usually decide whether it gets solved at all.
