A Russian sports official with close ties to Vladimir Putin secretly bankrolled a large portion of Donald Trump Jr.’s May wedding to Bettina Anderson, according to a ProPublica investigation published Monday. Reporters Justin Elliott, Brett Murphy, Joshua Kaplan, and Alex Mierjeski found that Umar Kremlev spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on the three-day event in the Bahamas, including renting a private island and staging a fireworks display.

Who is Umar Kremlev, and why does his role matter?
Kremlev is president of the International Boxing Association, an organization financed by the Russian state-owned energy giant Gazprom. According to ProPublica’s reporting, Putin awarded Kremlev Russia’s Order of Friendship state honor just a month before the wedding, and Kremlev was seen with Putin in China in the days leading up to the ceremony. ProPublica’s investigation also notes that Kremlev, born Umar Lutfulloyev before changing his name in 2010, controls Russian sports betting and national lottery operations, has a prior criminal record in Russia reported by the outlet Proekt, and has been tied to an organization under Ukrainian sanctions over allegations of abducting children.
What exactly did Kremlev pay for?
Records reviewed by ProPublica show Kremlev covered the cost of a private island used for the reception, at a rate of roughly $100,000 a night, an estimated $70,000 fireworks display, guest accommodations across the islands where the three-day event was held, and wedding-planning assistance. ProPublica characterizes the total contribution as “hundreds of thousands of dollars,” though an exact final figure wasn’t disclosed.
How has the Trump family responded?
Trump Jr.’s spokesperson described Kremlev simply as “a personal friend of Don,” and Kremlev’s own team said the two “have a friendly relationship.” Bettina Trump addressed the story directly in a lengthy Instagram post, writing that she and Trump Jr. “got married privately… surrounded ONLY by our family,” calling the ceremony itself “intimate, deeply personal and one of the most beautiful days of our lives.” She said Kremlev “very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations for us AFTER our wedding,” separate from the ceremony itself, calling it “an extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a friend.” Pushing back on any suggestion of a political angle, she wrote: “It’s unfortunate that something so personal and happy can be recast as something political or sinister simply because of who someone is or where they come from… Friendship doesn’t require a political motive. Generosity doesn’t automatically come with an agenda. And sometimes a wedding gift is simply a wedding gift.” She closed with, “NO CONSPIRACY, NO MYSTERY.” The White House did not respond to ProPublica’s requests for comment.

How are lawmakers reacting?
Rep. Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, posted his own response Monday: “Why did a Russian oligarch close to Putin fund Trump Jr.’s wedding in the Bahamas? Umar Kremlev spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on the President’s son. What did he get in return? We need answers.” As of publication, neither ProPublica’s reporting nor any other outlet has identified what, if anything, Kremlev received in return for covering the wedding costs.
