Google recently celebrated the first anniversary of its “AI Mode” in the U.S., proudly announcing that it has surpassed one billion monthly active users globally. According to their insights report, people are searching more than ever, with AI queries doubling every single quarter. But the most revealing stat is how we are asking questions: Google reports that the average AI Mode query is now triple the length of a traditional keyword search, and that we are engaging in deep, multi-turn “back-and-forth” conversations with their model.
Google’s PR team frames this as a beautiful evolution: “People are no longer worrying about the ‘right way’ to formulate their questions, they’re just asking.”
But let’s ask a question of our own: Are we slowly outsourcing our brains to Silicon Valley?
In the old days of the search bar, Google gave you a list of links. You had to click them, read different perspectives, evaluate the sources, and use your own brain to synthesize the truth. It required effort. It required critical thinking.
Now, we are being encouraged to let a single, billionaire-backed algorithm do the digesting for us. We ask a complex historical, scientific, or political question, and the AI hands us a neat, conversational paragraph. It feels like a friendly chat with an objective partner, but it’s actually a centralized monolith deciding what you get to know.
When we stop doing our own research, we lose the ability to spot bias. We lose the capacity to question authority. We start accepting a single, synthesized “truth” engineered by a handful of tech executives.
Technology is a tool, not a substitute for human logic. By all means, use AI to organize your day or brainstorm ideas. But when it comes to understanding the world, forming your opinions, and seeking the truth, never stop doing your own digging. Don’t let an algorithm do your thinking for you.
