July Jobs Report Showed 23,000 Losses as GOP Touts a ‘Roaring’ Economy

President Trump and Republican allies are heading into the November midterms with a unified message: the "Golden Age of America" has arrived and the economy is "roaring." The Bureau of Labor Statistics' own numbers tell a more complicated story.

Key Points

  • President Trump and Republican allies are heading into the November midterms with a unified message: the "Golden Age of America" has arrived and the economy is "roaring." The Bureau of Labor Statistics' own numbers tell a more complicated story.
  • The July 2026 jobs report showed the economy unexpectedly lost 23,000 jobs, badly missing the roughly 80,000 gain economists had forecast.
  • Worse, the Labor Department revised May and June payrolls down by a combined 103,000 jobs.
  • May's gain cut from 129,000 to 63,000, June's from 57,000 to just 20,000.
  • Elevated gas prices, a direct result of the ongoing Iran conflict disrupting energy markets, are acting as a persistent tax on commuters.
  • Sweeping tariffs on imported goods have raised input costs for businesses, which has pushed some to freeze hiring rather than absorb the hit to margins.
  • And aggressive immigration enforcement has tightened the labor supply in agriculture and hospitality, sectors that are now struggling to staff up even as job growth elsewhere stalls.

President Trump and Republican allies are heading into the November midterms with a unified message: the “Golden Age of America” has arrived and the economy is “roaring.” The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ own numbers tell a more complicated story.

The July 2026 jobs report showed the economy unexpectedly lost 23,000 jobs, badly missing the roughly 80,000 gain economists had forecast. Worse, the Labor Department revised May and June payrolls down by a combined 103,000 jobs. May’s gain cut from 129,000 to 63,000, June’s from 57,000 to just 20,000. The unemployment rate itself ticked down to 4.1%, but that’s partly a function of people leaving the workforce rather than finding jobs: labor force participation fell to 61.4% in July, the lowest level since the pandemic, as hundreds of thousands of discouraged workers stopped looking for work altogether.

What’s Actually Driving It

None of this happened in a vacuum. Elevated gas prices, a direct result of the ongoing Iran conflict disrupting energy markets, are acting as a persistent tax on commuters. Sweeping tariffs on imported goods have raised input costs for businesses, which has pushed some to freeze hiring rather than absorb the hit to margins. And aggressive immigration enforcement has tightened the labor supply in agriculture and hospitality, sectors that are now struggling to staff up even as job growth elsewhere stalls.

Each of those is a real, traceable policy choice, not an abstract market force, which makes them fair game for scrutiny regardless of which party is in office.

The Optics Problem

The White House’s messaging isn’t helped by the fact that, at the same time wage growth is being outpaced by inflation, reports have put total spending on White House construction projects, including a new ballroom, a helipad, a visitor screening center, and Lafayette Park fountains, at roughly $900 million, with the ballroom itself accounting for around $600 million of that. A federal appeals court has since ruled the administration needs congressional approval to continue the ballroom work. None of that spending caused the jobs report, but announcing a “roaring economy” while approving nine-figure construction projects is a communications choice that invites exactly the contrast critics are drawing.
