A 4-month-old girl was airlifted in critical condition after a single-vehicle crash in Miramar, Florida on Saturday afternoon. According to police, the infant’s mother was driving with her two children in the 2300 block of Southwest 173rd Avenue around 12:30 p.m. when she heard the baby crying and reached into the back seat to help feed her. In doing so, her foot pressed the accelerator, and the car swerved into a tree. The infant was airlifted to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital with serious injuries; the mother was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital as a precaution but was not injured, and the couple’s other child, a young boy, was also transported for evaluation but was unharmed.
It’s a devastating reminder of how quickly an ordinary moment behind the wheel, a crying baby, a reach into the back seat, can turn catastrophic, and our thoughts are with the family as the infant recovers.

Rear-seat mirrors that let a driver see a child without turning around, properly installed car seats, and, for longer trips, planning stops in advance can all reduce the split-second decisions that lead to crashes like this one. It’s not a satisfying answer to a heartbreaking story, but the evidence is consistent: most of these crashes are prevented by pulling over, not by redesigning roads.
