Fernando Mendoza, the Las Vegas Raiders’ No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, made his preseason debut Thursday night against the Arizona Cardinals, entering on the offense’s second drive of the game after starter Kirk Cousins opened under center. Playing with the second-team offense for most of his nearly three quarters of work, Mendoza went 10-of-16 for 97 yards and a touchdown pass to wide receiver Jack Bech, becoming the first No. 1 overall pick to throw a touchdown in his preseason debut since Baker Mayfield in 2018. The Raiders lost the game 27-14.

The performance drew immediate, enthusiastic coverage — reasonably so, given the pedigree and the touchdown. It’s also worth being honest about what a preseason opener against a defense playing conservatively actually tells you.

What a Debut Like This Can and Can’t Tell You

Preseason defenses generally don’t show their real scheme — the goal for veteran units in Week 1 of the preseason is avoiding injuries, not stopping a rookie quarterback. Mendoza’s 97 yards and one touchdown against that kind of look is a genuinely encouraging first step, and completing 10 of 16 passes shows real accuracy and poise. But it’s still one drive-and-a-half sample against backups and vanilla coverage, not a verdict on how he’ll handle NFL blitz packages and disguised looks once the games count.

The Bigger Picture in Vegas

None of that diminishes what was a clean, productive debut for a rookie carrying franchise-quarterback expectations. But the Raiders’ 27-14 loss is a reminder that one good quarterback performance doesn’t fix a roster on its own — the offensive line and defense that struggled against Arizona will be the bigger factors in whether Mendoza gets a fair runway to develop once the regular season begins.
