Marvel Studios used its D23 stage this week to unveil the cast of its long-awaited X-Men reboot, and the lineup leans heavily on prestige-TV and indie talent rather than established action stars.
Kevin Feige, joined by director Jake Schreier and star Sadie Sink, confirmed the core roster: Sink as Jean Grey, reprising a role she first teased in Spider-Man: Brand New Day; Kit Connor (Heartstopper) as Scott Summers/Cyclops; Christopher Abbott (Poor Things, Girls) as a younger Professor Charles Xavier; Samara Weaving (Ready or Not) as Emma Frost; Inde Navarrette (Obsession) as Rogue; and Maya Boyd (Deadbeat) as Storm. Adam Driver appeared via a surprise video reveal to confirm he’ll play the film’s villain, Nathaniel Milbury, better known in the comics as Mister Sinister.
The film is set for May 5, 2028, and will serve as the opening chapter of the MCU’s Phase 7, with Schreier, who previously directed Thunderbolts*, at the helm. Notably, the announcement made no mention of Wolverine, Magneto, or the Brotherhood of Mutants, an absence several outlets covering the reveal flagged as deliberate: after two decades of Hugh Jackman in the role, recasting Logan so soon would be a hard needle to thread, and building out a fresh core team first gives the studio room to introduce those characters later without an immediate comparison.
The casting also produces a small reunion of sorts: Christopher Abbott and Adam Driver, playing the film’s central philosophical and physical adversaries, both got their start as breakout cast members on HBO’s Girls. Whether that’s a meaningful creative signal or just a coincidence of casting, it’s already become one of the more-discussed details of the announcement.
