One of the fastest-growing visual trends on TikTok is the “Empty Universe Effect”. It’s an AI-powered video editing trick that allows creators to take a video of a bustling, crowded space—like a busy train station, a theme park, or a city street—and completely erase every other human being, leaving the creator standing entirely alone in an empty world.

Technically, it’s a cool piece of software engineering. But as an editorial concept, it is a terrifyingly accurate metaphor for how social media is quietly training us to view humanity.

When we use filters to literally edit out the public, we are participating in a digital fantasy of isolation. The algorithm tells us that our individual experience is the only one that matters. It suggests that other people—with different backgrounds, different races, different religions, and different walks of life—are simply “clutter” to be removed so we can focus on our own curated aesthetic.

Let’s apply some logic and critical thinking here. When we live in digital bubbles that allow us to block, mute, and edit out anyone who doesn’t align with our exact worldview or appearance, we lose our capacity for empathy. We start to see the world as a solo sport, where other people are just background extras or, worse, obstacles in our way.

This digital solipsism feeds directly into real-world biases and division. It makes it incredibly easy to judge or dismiss people of other races or walks of life because we have trained our brains to “delete” them from our mental landscape. It’s the ultimate form of echo-chamber thinking: if they don’t fit my narrative, I’ll just apply a filter and pretend they don’t exist.

As independents and free thinkers, we have to fight this urge. The real world is crowded, messy, and beautifully diverse. It is filled with people who will challenge your assumptions, make you uncomfortable, and force you to grow. That isn’t clutter—that is society.

Instead of trying to stand alone in an artificial, “empty universe,” let’s keep our minds open. Let’s stop editing out the people around us. Let’s start looking them in the eye, having actual conversations, and remembering that the ultimate test of our humanity is how we treat the crowd, not how cleanly we can erase them.
