Let’s talk about the digital tightrope we are all being forced to walk. Not too long ago, internet infrastructure giant Cloudflare suffered a massive outage that instantly knocked out a huge chunk of the global web. More recently, a massive Verizon network outage triggered over 100,000 frantic searches from people suddenly cut off from the world, desperately asking, “Is Verizon down?”.
If you listen to the talking heads or the corporate PR departments, these are just “unfortunate technical anomalies.” But let’s look at this with some basic, boots-on-the-ground logic.
We have been sold a hyper-connected, paperless dream by multi-billion-dollar telecom and tech monopolies. They tell us that putting all our digital eggs in one centralized basket is “efficient.” But what happens when that single basket drops? You can’t call 911. You can’t access your bank account. You can’t run your small business or do your job. The local merchant can’t swipe a card to sell bread, and the gig worker can’t earn their daily living.
The corporate executives who run these monopolies get to hide behind automated customer service bots and generic apology templates. Meanwhile, you are still expected to pay your premium monthly bill on time, even though the lifeline you paid for proved to be incredibly fragile.
As independents, we have to look past the shiny corporate marketing. When a handful of billionaire-backed conglomerates control the entire infrastructure of our daily lives, we aren’t just consumers, we are hostages to their cost-cutting. Centralization is great for corporate profit margins, but it’s a disaster for human resilience. It’s time we stop letting corporate monopolies dictate how fragile our daily lives are allowed to be, and start demanding local, decentralized accountability.
