CNN says an aide named Natalie Harp showed Trump a Politico graphic and some television clips, and that it set him off. Hours later he banned three newsrooms from the White House. The chief of staff and the vice president were not in the building.
What the reporting says
Kaitlan Collins reported it, citing unnamed sources. Harp put a Politico graphic and TV coverage in front of Trump. He was, in the word used, infuriated. The ban followed.
It does not say Harp told him to do it. It says she is the one who brought him the coverage.
The other detail is who was missing. Susie Wiles, the chief of staff, and JD Vance were both out of the building when he decided.
Who Harp is
She has been near Trump constantly for years, in a role that has never had a clean title. She carries the printer. She hands him things.
That is the whole job and it is not a small one. In this White House, the person who decides what paper reaches the president has a kind of power that does not show up on an org chart.
What Trump himself said
This is where the story gets complicated for everybody blaming an aide.
Asked what set it off, Trump did not mention a graphic or a clip. He said it was “really just cumulative stories over the last few years, you get sick of it.” Asked how far it went: “I don’t want them in my office. I don’t want them here.”

An aide showing a president a chart is not a scandal. Somebody hands every president news they do not like. That is the job.
The thing worth looking at is what the story is doing. “Natalie Harp made him do it” is a comfortable frame for a lot of people at once. It lets Trump’s allies say he was provoked. It lets his staff say the adults were out of the room. It lets critics keep a narrative where somebody else is always steering. All three get something.
Trump did not take that exit. He explained the ban himself, twice, in his own words, and neither answer mentioned a graphic. A man who wanted to blame an aide had an easy opening and did not use it.
If Wiles and Vance being out of the building is meant to suggest this would not have happened otherwise, that is a claim about restraint nobody has demonstrated. They have been in the building for plenty of other things.
The question
Does it matter who handed him the printout? If the answer changes how you feel about the ban, ask yourself whether it should. He has said plainly what he wanted and why.
