Republicans are heading to Dallas next week for something the party has never done before: a full-blown national convention built entirely around a midterm election. The two-day event runs September 9 and 10 at the American Airlines Center, and party insiders are already calling it “Trumpapalooza.”

President Trump announced the gathering on Truth Social, calling it a “truly historic event,” and he is set to headline the closing night. Vice President JD Vance will deliver a keynote on the opening night. Organizers expect roughly 20,000 attendees, according to John Hiller, a White House aide who chairs the event’s organizing board.

A convention with no nominee to nominate

Traditional party conventions exist to formally nominate a presidential candidate. There is no such business on the docket here, since 2026 is a midterm year with no White House race on the ballot. What Republicans have built instead is closer to a two-day campaign rally with a convention’s staging: speeches, fundraising, and an effort to rally the base ahead of November, packed into half the runtime of the 2024 Republican National Convention.

SMU political science professor Cal Jillson, who has watched Texas politics for decades, has noted the choice of Dallas itself is notable. It marks the first time in more than 40 years that a major Republican gathering has landed in Dallas rather than its more conservative neighbor, Fort Worth, even though Dallas has trended Democratic in recent cycles.

Why bother with a midterm convention at all

Midterm elections are historically brutal for the party holding the White House, and Republicans are heading into November defending narrow margins in both chambers. A made-for-television show of force in a friendly state, with the president closing it out personally, is a fairly direct answer to that math: if you cannot change the historical pattern, you can at least try to out-hype it. Whether 20,000 fired-up attendees in an arena translates into turnout in swing districts is the actual question this event is designed to answer, and nobody will know until November.
