The Wayans family parody franchise is officially back in business. Scary Movie 6, the sixth installment in the horror-spoof series and the first with Marlon, Shawn, and Keenen Ivory Wayans working together as writers in 17 years, hit theaters June 5 and has now moved to streaming, landing on Paramount+ on September 3.
The reboot pulled in more than $230 million worldwide at the box office, a strong number for a franchise that had gone dormant since 2013’s Scary Movie 5. Michael Tiddes directed, working from a script credited to the three Wayans brothers alongside Rick Alvarez, and the cast leans heavily on series veterans: Anna Faris, Regina Hall, Jon Abrahams, Lochlyn Munro, Cheri Oteri, Dave Sheridan, Anthony Anderson, and Chris Elliott all return alongside Marlon and Shawn Wayans.
Why the reunion mattered
The Scary Movie franchise built its reputation in the early 2000s by spoofing whatever horror movies were dominating theaters that year, and the Wayans brothers’ fingerprints were all over the original two entries before they stepped away from the series for nearly two decades. Their return as both writers and producers is the closest thing this franchise has had to a soft reset, trading the more scattershot parody style of the later sequels for something closer to the original formula.
Paramount’s bet paid off commercially, and the studio has already lined up Scary Movie for a Halloween-season push on Paramount+ alongside other horror titles. Marlon Wayans has said publicly he would be open to a seventh installment that spoofs some of 2026’s bigger horror hits, though nothing has been formally greenlit.
Parody franchises live or die on cultural relevance, and the fact that this one found an audience willing to pay for a theatrical ticket in 2026, two decades after the original, says something about how much appetite is still left for movies that just make fun of other movies rather than reinventing anything.
