The LAPD has released bodycam footage of officers fatally shooting a man who approached them with a raised baseball bat in the Harvard Heights neighborhood.
What Led to the Shooting
Officers responded around 6:25 p.m. to reports of an assault with a deadly weapon at a gas station near Normandie Avenue and Washington Boulevard. Security camera video showed the suspect, later identified as 33-year-old Alejandro Garcia, breaking vehicle windows and chasing bystanders with a bat before officers arrived.
The Confrontation
When officers arrived, the suspect refused to comply, continued advancing toward them, and raised the bat with both hands in a swinging position. Officers opened fire, striking him once; he was pronounced dead at a hospital. No officers or bystanders were injured. Investigators recovered a 35-inch aluminum softball bat at the scene.
