New Orleans’ Office of Cultural Economy has distributed $125,000 in state appropriation funds directly to local “culture bearers”, including Mardi Gras Indian performers, Social Aid & Pleasure Clubs, and brass band musicians.
Where the Money Came From
The funding was secured by State Representative Candace Newell and disbursed as one-time grants to individuals and organizations whose work sustains the city’s cultural traditions, from second line parades and jazz to Mardi Gras Indian artistry.
What Officials Said
“We are excited to put these dollars directly into the hands of culture bearers,” said Frederick “Wood” Delahoussaye, director of the Office of Cultural Economy, adding that “culture is not just who we are, it is how we earn, how we teach, and how we heal.”

Recipients were recognized at a public celebration at Gallier Hall in June.
