Iran is shifting to what a senior official described to Reuters as a “fully offensive” military posture, after talks aimed at turning a fragile ceasefire into a permanent deal collapsed ahead of an August 17 deadline. The breakdown centers on control of the Strait of Hormuz, where tanker traffic has stayed stalled as negotiations dragged on.

Gen. Yadollah Javani, head of the IRGC’s political bureau, separately warned that Iran’s posture could shift from defensive to offensive, citing the possibility of “strategic surprises.” The unnamed official who spoke to Reuters said Iranian forces “must be prepared to escalate tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and wider region,” and raised the possibility of a “timely and precise” strike aimed at breaking a U.S. naval presence in the area if diplomacy keeps failing.

No Extension From Washington

President Trump ruled out extending the ceasefire when asked directly, even as backchannel contact between his administration and the IRGC reportedly continued through intermediaries. That combination, public hardening on both sides paired with private contact still happening, is usually a sign a conflict is unresolved rather than settled, not that it’s about to reopen immediately.

The economic fallout is already showing up at the pump. Gas prices, which were under $3 a gallon before the conflict began, have been running above $4 nationally for weeks, hitting $4.48 in May and holding near $4.10 in mid-August, according to AAA. A renewed standoff over the Strait, through which a large share of the world’s seaborne oil trade passes, would put fresh pressure on prices that are already up roughly 30% year over year.

What do you think? How much more room is there for gas prices to climb if the Strait of Hormuz standoff escalates? Let us know your thoughts in the comments on BeezLoop.com!
