An Instagram account calling itself the “Dimagi Naxal Party” picked up somewhere between 160,000 and 200,000 followers within a day of launching, before Instagram suspended it. The account was a direct, satirical response to a phrase Prime Minister Narendra Modi used in his Independence Day address from the Red Fort.

In that speech, marking his 80th Independence Day address, Modi said India had succeeded in clearing armed Naxals from the forests, but warned that “dimagi,” or intellectual, Naxals were still “lurking around.” Union minister Kiren Rijiju followed up the next day with a four-point definition of what he meant by the term. The remarks were widely read as a warning aimed at young, educated critics of the government.

Turning the Label Into a Punchline

Instead of responding with op-eds or hashtag campaigns, a wave of Gen Z and millennial users did something more pointed: they built a mock political party around the label itself, adopting branding tied to Bhagat Singh and the motto “Think, Research and Resist,” and spun up a companion account on X. The joke traveled fast specifically because it took a phrase meant to sound alarming and made it absurd.

Instagram suspended the account not long after it crossed its followers milestone, which only added to the story, turning a satirical account into a small case study in how quickly platforms will step in when a joke about state rhetoric starts moving at that speed.

What do you think? Does satire like this actually blunt heavy-handed political rhetoric, or just get shut down before it can? Let us know your thoughts in the comments on BeezLoop.com!
