Wheel of Fortune has fired longtime announcer Jim Thornton following an internal investigation, Sony Pictures Television confirmed this week. A company spokesperson said Thornton’s employment with the show “has been terminated, effective immediately” after the probe concluded.

What led to the investigation?

Sony launched its inquiry after a passenger on a May American Airlines flight from Charlotte to Los Angeles photographed what she said was Thornton’s laptop screen showing a chat room the passenger described as being used by people with pedophilic interests. Thornton was suspended from the show on September 1, when Sony first announced the investigation, and the photos began circulating publicly in the days that followed.

Thornton’s attorney has said his client did not engage in any illegal conduct, was not arrested and has not been charged with a crime. According to the attorney, Thornton has volunteered with suicide-prevention chat forums and believes he was sent a wrong link that redirected him to a similarly named site intended for people with pedophilic thoughts, rather than the crisis-support forum he meant to visit. The attorney has said timestamps from the photos do not, in his view, support claims that Thornton spent an extended period on the site.

Who will replace him on air?

Thornton had announced Wheel of Fortune since 2011, taking over after longtime announcer Charlie O’Donnell died. Sony has said an interim announcer will voice Thornton’s parts when the show returns for its new season on September 14, and the company has not named a permanent replacement. Thornton previously spent years as an announcer on The Price Is Right and as a radio news anchor before joining Wheel of Fortune.

A termination is not a finding, and both things can be true

Thornton has not been arrested or charged, and his attorney says no illegal conduct occurred. Sony conducted an internal investigation and fired him. Those facts sit together without contradiction, because an employer and a prosecutor are answering different questions. Sony was deciding whether it could continue employing the voice of a family game show amid these allegations. That judgment does not require proof beyond a reasonable doubt, and it is not evidence of a crime.

The explanation offered is specific and checkable in principle: Thornton’s attorney says he volunteered with suicide-prevention chat forums and was sent a wrong link that redirected to a similarly named site, and that photo timestamps do not support claims of extended time on the page. That is either true or it is not, and it is the kind of claim that documentation could substantiate. Nothing public resolves it either way.

The uncomfortable part

This began with a passenger photographing a stranger’s laptop on a plane. However one feels about the outcome, that is the mechanism: a fellow traveler’s photo of someone else’s screen, circulated publicly, ending a fifteen-year career within a week and attaching the worst available inference to a man never charged with anything.

There is a real argument that this is accountability working, that a private company acted on credible information rather than waiting for a prosecution that might never come. There is an equally real argument that it is a system with no way to be wrong, in which an accusation of this specific kind is effectively unanswerable regardless of the facts. Which reading you find more persuasive probably depends on how much weight you give the explanation his lawyer offered, and that may be the honest place to leave it.
