President Trump said Tuesday he’s giving “serious consideration” to renaming Lake Ontario “Lake America,” posting an altered map on social media with the lake’s name crossed out and replaced in gold lettering alongside an American flag graphic. Trump wrote that the US doesn’t “expect to be doing much business with Ontario any longer,” tying the proposal directly to the escalating trade dispute with Canada.

The proposal came days after Trump imposed 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion of Canadian goods and mirrors his earlier renaming of the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” at the start of his second term. Trump also used the post to deny a separate claim that he’d interfere with Canadians’ right to speak French, calling it a “lie.”

Why a Name Change Like This Has No Real Legal Force

The US doesn’t have unilateral authority to rename Lake Ontario in any way that binds international recognition, since the lake is a shared border water with Canada and its name is established through longstanding geographic and diplomatic convention, not a US executive decision. The Gulf of Mexico renaming showed the pattern this would likely follow: US federal agencies and maps can adopt the new name domestically, while the international community and most other countries continue using the original name.

What It Signals About the Trade Fight

Floating a symbolic gesture like a lake renaming alongside a real, substantive 50% tariff suggests the trade dispute has moved from purely economic terms into a more personal, rhetorical conflict between Trump and Canadian officials like Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Prime Minister Mark Carney. Whether that rhetoric cools down or escalates further is likely to track closely with whether the two countries make any actual progress on the underlying tariff dispute.
