Gunmen drove up to a crowd outside a shop in Kingstown on Friday night and opened fire. Eight people were hit. Four died. It is the second-deadliest mass shooting in the history of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, a country of about 100,000 people.
What happened
Shortly before 10:30 p.m. Friday, a vehicle pulled up near a shop in Green Hill, a community in central Kingstown, where a group had gathered. People inside the vehicle fired into the crowd and drove off.
Officers found two bodies on a public road, a woman’s body inside a parked vehicle, and a fourth body on nearby land.
The dead:
- Steve King, 22, of Green Hill.
- Antonio Samuel, 30, of Green Hill.
- Shaqueil Peters, 26, of Green Hill.
- Shevon Chandler, 23, of Paul’s Avenue, the woman killed.
Four others were wounded. Two were treated and released. Two remain hospitalized under police supervision.
Only a July 19, 2023 shooting in the Harbour Club area of Kingstown, which killed five, has been deadlier.
The markings
This is the detail that was missing from early coverage, and it is the one investigators are working.
Acting Commissioner of Police Trevor “Buju” Bailey and acting Assistant Commissioner Brenton Smith told reporters on Saturday that officers found markings on walls and buildings near the scene, and that police recognized what they signify.
Whilst I will not be specific with the markings, we were able to identify the association with these markings.

Police have not said the markings are connected to the killings. They have not said which group. No arrests have been made.
Officers asked the public for information about weapons and criminal activity, urged young people away from crime, and warned against circulating unverified accusations online.
The context
The country had recorded 37 homicides in 2026 as of the briefing.
Scale matters for reading that number. St. Vincent and the Grenadines has a population of roughly 100,000. Thirty-seven homicides there is proportionally equivalent to something on the order of 120,000 in the United States, which records closer to 20,000 in a year.
National Security Minister St. Clair Leacock, who is also deputy prime minister and has been carrying the prime minister’s portfolios since July, has been publicly warning young people away from criminal activity.

A drive-by that kills four in a country of 100,000 is not a crime story in the way American readers are used to processing one. It is a national event. The equivalent per capita in the United States would dominate coverage for a week.
The markings are the part worth watching, and the honest thing is that police revealing they recognize an association while refusing to say what it is cuts both ways. It signals investigators have a direction, which is better than nothing four days in. It also invites exactly the speculation the same officers warned the public against, and in a country this small, a rumor about which group did it is a rumor about identifiable neighborhoods and families.
What should trouble the government is that this happened in central Kingstown, outside a shop, at 10:30 on a Friday. That is not a remote place or an unusual hour. Whoever did it did not expect to be identified, in a capital where almost everyone is identifiable, and four days later they are right.
The tourism framing in some international coverage deserves pushback. Several outlets led with a Caribbean nation known for luxury tourism, which tells you who those stories were written for. Four people from Green Hill and Paul’s Avenue are dead. The relevance of the yacht charter industry to that is zero, and leading with it turns a mass killing into a travel advisory.
And this is a small state problem with no obvious answer. A country this size cannot fund the forensic and investigative capacity that a case like this needs, which is why regional cooperation keeps being proposed and keeps not being built. The clearance rate on a case like this is the whole ballgame, because in a place this small, one unsolved mass shooting tells everyone what the odds are.
The question
If police already recognize what the markings near the scene signify, what is holding up an arrest? And what does a country of 100,000 do when it needs a homicide investigation it cannot staff?
