A Russian drone strike on a shopping center in Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s hometown, killed 16 people and wounded more than 130 on Friday. Ukrainian officials say it was a double tap strike, a first wave of drones hit the mall, and a second wave struck roughly half an hour later as rescue workers were already responding.
Zelenskyy called the attack “an absolute Russian atrocity,” writing on social media that “they’re just monsters,” and vowed Ukraine would respond. Nine people remained missing as of the latest count, and Russian strikes elsewhere in the country killed two more people the following day.
What Makes a Double-Tap Strike Different From a Single Strike?
The second wave is aimed specifically at whoever responds to the first, which is why the tactic draws sharper condemnation than a single strike does: it treats the act of rescuing wounded civilians as itself a target. That’s the specific detail driving international reaction to this attack, not just the shopping center strike alone, which is why Zelenskyy and Ukrainian officials have emphasized the double tap sequence in describing it.
The mall was full of civilians in the middle of the day when the drones hit, and the location, Zelenskyy’s own hometown, has added a symbolic weight to the attack beyond its already severe casualty count. Ukraine has not yet detailed what form its promised response will take.
