Seven months after Bill Belichick got passed over for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in a decision that baffled just about everyone outside the voting room, the Hall announced it’s overhauling how that room works.

The selection committee is shrinking from 50 voters down to 25, with three rotating alternates for a total pool of 28. The Hall is also collapsing its separate “seniors” category, so voters will now weigh one coach and one contributor together with all player finalists in a single pool of 15, down from a maximum of 18 finalists under the old system.

Back to an in-person vote

Maybe the bigger change is procedural: the Hall is bringing back an in-person selection meeting for the first time since the pandemic pushed voting remote six years ago. Hall of Fame CEO Jim Porter said the changes followed a two-and-a-half-year review of the voting process, which puts the timeline well before the Belichick snub specifically, even if that snub is clearly what turned a quiet internal review into a public overhaul.

Belichick needed 80% support from the 50-person committee and didn’t get it, despite six Super Bowl rings as a head coach and a resume that isn’t seriously in dispute among football people. The reaction to that outcome was loud enough that it’s now reshaping how the Hall picks everyone who comes after him.

What changes for future candidates

The new rules take effect for the class of 2027, meaning Belichick himself will be voted on under this same overhauled system next time his name comes up. Whether a smaller, more concentrated committee actually produces better outcomes than fifty voters is an open question, but the Hall clearly decided the current process wasn’t defensible after a coach with Belichick’s résumé got shut out.
