The LeBron James Family Foundation and the PGA Tour announced a new partnership Tuesday, introducing a two-day event called the LeBron James Family Foundation Invitational, set to debut July 6-7, 2027 at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio. The event will bring resources and mentorship opportunities to students and families connected to the Foundation’s I PROMISE program.
The tournament will pair amateurs with pros from the PGA Tour’s Pathway to Progression Pro-Bound Five program, giving students from I PROMISE direct mentorship access to professional golfers who came up through that same developmental pathway.
Why This Fits LeBron’s Broader Akron Investment
The I PROMISE School and its surrounding support programs have been LeBron James’ primary philanthropic project in his hometown for years, providing everything from tuition assistance to family support services for at-risk Akron students. Layering a PGA Tour partnership onto that existing infrastructure gives the program a new fundraising and mentorship channel without having to build separate infrastructure from scratch.
Why the Wait Until 2027
Announcing an event more than 300 days before it actually happens gives organizers time to build out sponsorships, finalize the pro-am field, and market the tournament properly, standard practice for a new event trying to establish itself on a crowded golf calendar. It also means Akron has over a year to build local anticipation before a single putt is struck.
