A Democrat running for county council in Indiana went viral this week after a local TV forum in which she said she’d “fire all Republicans” and ended with a message for voters: “We have guns too.” Jaime West is running for the Fayette County Council against Republican Gary Keener Jr.
The interview aired on a local TV channel in Connersville, east of Indianapolis, and spread nationally after conservative accounts posted it. West couldn’t be reached for comment, Fox News reported.
What did Jaime West say at the forum?
Asked what unpopular decision she might make if elected, West said: “Fire all Republicans. I wouldn’t let them, I don’t even talk to them. I don’t like them.” She went on: “This ICE coming into our communities, stealing people’s jobs. I mean, I’ve been threatened so many times to my face by MAGA.” She added that “there are good Republicans out there,” but called “these MAGAs” racist and “not very intelligent at all,” and said: “The sheriff’s nephew threatened to blow my head off.”
When the moderator asked for a final message to voters, West said, “We have guns too,” and raised both hands as the moderator moved on to voting information.
How did people react to the Jaime West video?
Critics pounced. The conservative account LibsOfTikTok wrote, “This is not a skit,” and asked whether West was intoxicated; others said she slurred her words. That’s an accusation, not an established fact, and West hasn’t responded. Fayette County Sheriff Zac Jones disputed her claim about his family: “I have five nieces and zero nephews,” he told Fox News. “I’m not sure what she is talking about, and I’m certain she has no idea what she is talking about either.”
Early voting is already underway in Fayette County, and local TV crews went to a polling site to ask voters what they made of it.
The BeezLoop Take
There’s no way to spin this. A candidate for office said she’d fire people for their party and closed with “We have guns too,” at a time when political violence has people on edge. That’s not a gaffe. It’s the kind of talk Democrats rightly condemn when it comes from the other side, and they should say so here just as plainly.
It’s also one county council candidate in a small Indiana county, not a party platform, and the people blasting her clip should hold their own side’s violent rhetoric to the same standard. The fair rule is simple: nobody running for office should hint at guns as an answer to losing an argument.
The open question: will Indiana Democrats publicly disavow her, or let it fade before Election Day?
