Jonathan Meléndez, the 38-year-old keyboardist of the Mexican indie rock band Camilo Séptimo, was found dead Tuesday night along with his wife, their 3-year-old daughter and the family’s nanny inside an apartment in an upscale neighborhood near Mexico City. His wife, Ana Paula, was four months pregnant. A 6-year-old child in the home was found alive and unharmed.

Authorities said three of the four victims, including the young girl, were shot in the head, while the fourth was shot in the back, according to CNN and multiple other outlets that reviewed statements from Mexican officials. The killings were discovered late Tuesday, and the case has been treated as a homicide investigation from the outset rather than a break-in or robbery.

Two men arrested

Mexican authorities arrested two men on Wednesday in a joint operation involving the State of Mexico Prosecutor’s Office, the federal Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection, and the Mexico City Secretariat of Citizen Security. One suspect, identified in Mexican press as Diego Sebastián “N,” is described by prosecutors as the probable perpetrator and reportedly had a personal association with Meléndez that authorities say he used to gain entry to the home. A second man, identified as Gerardo “N,” is under investigation for his alleged involvement.

Mexican authorities routinely withhold suspects’ full surnames during active investigations, which is why both men are being identified only by first name and a last-initial in official statements and news coverage.

A band with a small but devoted following

Camilo Séptimo is a synthpop and indie rock trio from Mexico City, known for a moody, atmospheric sound that built a dedicated fan base across Latin America over more than a decade together. Meléndez played keyboards alongside bandmates Manuel Mendoza and Erik Vázquez. The band has not released a public statement beyond acknowledging the loss, and Meléndez’s family has asked for privacy while the investigation continues.

Fans and fellow musicians began posting tributes to Meléndez within hours of the news breaking, with several sharing clips of the band’s live performances and messages describing him as a quiet, generous presence both on stage and off.

The investigation is ongoing, and Mexican authorities have not released a full account of a motive. This story will be updated as authorities release additional confirmed details.
