Tonopah Valley High School in Arizona has canceled the remainder of its 2026 football season, both varsity and junior varsity, following a sheriff’s investigation into alleged misconduct among players during a team camp.
What Prompted the Investigation
Saddle Mountain Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Michael Winters announced the season-long cancellation Friday, after initially canceling only that week’s games. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office had taken a report describing players “dry humping” each other while the team was at a football camp in Williams, Arizona.
Where the Investigation Stands
Investigators conducted interviews, but according to the sheriff’s office, no one involved wanted to press charges, meaning the incident has not resulted in criminal charges as of this week. The school district has placed faculty members on administrative leave while the investigation continues.
The Fallout for Players
The decision effectively ends the season for every player on the roster, regardless of individual involvement in the alleged incident, a consequence the district has defended as necessary while it sorts out what happened and who was responsible for supervision at the camp.
