Kristi Noem filed for divorce on Monday after 34 years of marriage. The filing is two pages of standard language. Most of the coverage is about something else entirely, and that is the part worth talking about.

The filing

  • Filed September 28, 2026, in Hamlin County, South Dakota.
  • Grounds: irreconcilable differences, which in South Dakota is the no-fault option.
  • She and Bryon Noem married in 1992.
  • They have three children: Kassidy, Kennedy and Booker.

Noem is the former governor of South Dakota and served as Secretary of Homeland Security until March, when she left the department amid scrutiny of a $220 million DHS advertising campaign that featured her personally.

The rest of it

In July, Noem’s mother told the Daily Mail that her daughter intended to divorce. The filing also follows tabloid publication of photographs said to show Bryon Noem in women’s clothing, and reporting that he maintained a secret online presence.

We are not republishing those photographs, describing them further, or treating them as the story. Bryon Noem is not an elected official, has not sought public life, and what a private person wears is not news.

The BeezLoop Take

The public interest in this filing is thin and worth naming honestly. Kristi Noem is a public figure, a divorce filing is a public record, and she ran DHS until six months ago. That is enough to report the filing. It is not enough to justify most of what is being written around it.

The tabloid material is about her husband, who never ran for anything. There is a real line between scrutiny of power and entertainment at the expense of someone adjacent to power, and an enormous amount of the coverage this week is on the wrong side of it. Publications that would defend any of this as accountability journalism should try explaining which public decision it holds anyone accountable for.

And there is a straightforward test we would apply to ourselves. If the same photographs surfaced of the spouse of a Democratic cabinet secretary, would the outlets currently running them be running them? Some would. Most of the ones doing it loudest would be writing about privacy instead.

If you want the Noem accountability story, it already exists and it has nothing to do with her marriage. It is the $220 million her department spent on ads featuring her, the contract that went to a firm tied to her operation, and the itemized invoices that included $20,000 in horse rentals. That is public money and a public decision. This is a divorce.

The question

What does a 34-year marriage ending tell the public about how anyone governed? And why is the genuinely accountable Noem story, the one about $220 million, getting a fraction of this attention?
