The domestic box office set an all-time record for the summer movie season this year, with ticket sales from May 1 through Labor Day on September 7 reaching an estimated $4.76 billion, according to tracking cited by Deadline and other industry outlets. That edges past the previous record of $4.755 billion set in 2013.

What drove the numbers

Every month from May through August topped $1 billion in domestic ticket sales, the first time that has happened in a single summer. Films including a new Spider-Man release and The Odyssey were among the biggest contributors to the total, with strong turnout continuing into the Labor Day weekend itself.

Why the comparison to 2013 comes with caveats

The 2026 summer tracking window ran 130 days, from the first weekend of May through Labor Day, compared with 123 days in 2013, when Labor Day fell earlier, on September 2. The longer window means 2026 had roughly a week of additional ticket sales built into its total.

The figures also are not adjusted for inflation. The average U.S. movie ticket price in 2013 was around $8.13, while the average price in 2026 is well above $11. A dollar-for-dollar record set 13 years apart, without adjusting for ticket price increases, does not represent the same number of tickets sold or the same real economic activity.

Where that leaves the industry

Even accounting for the longer calendar window and unadjusted dollar figures, this summer was the strongest for theaters since 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic upended attendance patterns industry-wide. Analysts covering the box office have described the summer as evidence that audiences are still willing to turn out for theatrical releases when the release slate is strong, even as overall annual attendance remains below pre-pandemic levels.
