A Historic Early Exit
The loss marked Djokovic’s earliest exit from a Grand Slam in two decades, dating back to the 2006 Australian Open, and it was the longest opening-round match of his career. The 39-year-old had never previously lost in the first round at the US Open in over 20 appearances.
A Visibly Struggling Champion
Djokovic appeared unwell throughout the match, and was in tears during and after the loss, which came 21 years to the day since his US Open debut. “I’m trying to address really what’s going on and how far I can go this way,” he said afterward.
