A routine patrol stop in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood turned up a stolen Mercedes, a homemade handgun with no serial number, narcotics and an outstanding sexual assault warrant, according to the Seattle Police Department, which arrested two people in connection with the discovery.
An officer patrolling the 700 block of Northwest 65th Street around 2:28 p.m. on September 1 noticed a Mercedes sedan with no front license plate stopped at a traffic light. A records check on the rear plate showed it did not match the vehicle, prompting the officer to investigate further.
Suspects located blocks from the car
While checking the surrounding area near Northwest 56th Street, the officer spotted two people matching the vehicle’s occupants walking together toward 8th Avenue Northwest and Northwest Market Street. Additional officers responded and detained both of them without incident.
Police said a 35-year-old man in the pair was wanted on active warrants tied to sexual assault and felony harassment charges. A 24-year-old woman who was with him was found carrying a handgun with no serial number, which she told officers the man had given her to hold, according to police.
Stolen car found abandoned with narcotics inside
Officers located the stolen Mercedes still running in a driveway in the 5500 block of 7th Avenue Northwest. A search of the vehicle turned up narcotics, credit cards bearing names other than the suspects’, a police-style taser and other miscellaneous property, police said.
The man was booked for investigation of eluding police and unlawful possession of a firearm, in addition to the outstanding warrants, which together totaled roughly $15,000 in bail. The Seattle Police Department said the investigation into the stolen vehicle and its contents remains ongoing.
