Everything Sprouts, LLC is recalling alfalfa sprouts sold under the Calco and Everything Sprouts brands after they were linked to a multistate E. coli and Salmonella outbreak that has sickened at least 55 people across 15 states. Four people have been hospitalized; no deaths have been reported.
The CDC says illnesses date back to May 31, 2026, with the most recent reported case starting August 8. Of the 55 confirmed illnesses, 46 involved E. coli, 7 involved Salmonella, and 2 people were infected with both. States with reported cases include Florida, Minnesota, North Carolina, and Wisconsin. The Minneapolis-based grower issued a voluntary recall of its 5-ounce alfalfa sprout containers distributed since May 27.
What Triggered the Recall
The FDA opened an inspection and began collecting samples at the Everything Sprouts facility on August 19 to trace the contamination back to its source. Sprouts are a repeat offender in foodborne illness outbreaks because the warm, humid conditions needed to grow them are also ideal for bacteria to multiply, and unlike most produce, sprouts are typically eaten raw with no cooking step that would kill off contamination.
What to Do If You Have These Sprouts
Anyone with Calco or Everything Sprouts alfalfa sprouts purchased since late May should check the packaging against the recall notice and throw them out or return them rather than eating them, even if they look and smell normal. Symptoms of E. coli and Salmonella infection typically include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, and people in high-risk groups, including young children, older adults, and those who are immunocompromised, should contact a doctor if symptoms appear after eating recalled sprouts.
