Not too long ago, a massive Verizon network outage knocked over 100,000 Americans offline. Search trends exploded with frantic queries like “is verizon down” and “verizon outages.”
People realized their expensive, pocket-sized glass lifelines had suddenly turned into useless paperweights.
If you read the corporate statements or watched the television coverage, it was the same old routine. Verizon issued a polite, robotic apology, promised they were “working tirelessly,” and everyone eventually shrugged and went back to swiping.
The Cost of Convenience
But let’s use some independent, Yonkers-bred logic to look past the corporate PR. We are living in a society bullied by multi-billion-dollar telecom monopolies.
They’ve outsourced every single daily lifeline to a centralized digital grid. They told us that paper cash was “outdated” and forced us onto digital payments. They told us landlines were “obsolete” and forced us onto cell networks.
They promised that centralized, corporate consolidation was the pinnacle of efficiency and safety.
When the Grid Drops
But what happens when their centralized infrastructure drops? You can’t call 911. You can’t pay for gas. You can’t open your business or run your shift.
The local merchant can’t sell bread, and the gig worker can’t earn their daily living. While you are stranded and unable to function, the corporate executives who built this fragile monopoly are completely insulated from the consequences.
They hide behind automated chatbot support and standard customer service templates. And guess what? You are still going to get your premium Verizon bill at the end of the month, and you’re still expected to pay every single cent on time.
Demanding Resilience
Centralization is great for corporate profit margins and billionaire executive bonuses. It is an absolute disaster for human resilience and local safety.
As independents and logical thinkers, we have to wake up. True safety and resilience don’t come from a single, centralized corporate basket.
It’s time we stop letting these massive telecom conglomerates control how fragile our daily lives are allowed to be. We need to start demanding local, decentralized alternatives and real corporate accountability.
