On Sunday night, Messi was introduced to the Inter Miami fans at a sold-out DRV PNK Stadium. The event was also streamed live on YouTube, with over 3.5 billion views.
Among the celebrities in attendance were David Beckham, Serena Williams, LeBron James, and Patrick Mahomes. Beckham, who is a co-owner of Inter Miami, said that Messi’s arrival is “a gift to the sport.”
“He’s one of the greatest players if not the greatest player to ever play the game,” Beckham said. “And he’s here in Miami.”
Messi’s debut with Inter Miami is scheduled for Friday night against Mexican club Cruz Azul. The match is already sold out, and tickets are being resold for up to $1,300.
Messi’s arrival in Miami is a major coup for MLS. The league has been trying to attract top talent from Europe for years, and Messi’s signing is a major step in that direction.
